Perfectly Unplanned

Two-years ago I took a bus to a city hoping to find love and what I found was a friend on a bus. We were perfect strangers that cold November morning in 2014. Not sure if she realizes it, but that meeting changed the course of my life. It catapulted me into the world of community art. I looked to piece together the merger between fashion business and social change. She taught me what a fellowship was and how to explore creative spaces in a city?

Gracie arrived in town for a spontaneous trip. I had all my plans and schedules, looking to see if we could squeeze a meeting. After asking if we could FaceTime instead of meeting in person, I was ashamed at my busyness. I picked up the phone, ‘Gracie where are you’. I zipped on a blue dress and made my way downtown to see her.

There Gracie sat as lovely as ever. We spoke of our journeys and we laughed those comforting laughs knowing that we are each going through something. We went on to a place in the artsy part of town artificial gunshots sounds went off alongside ‘afro’ music. I went home tonight glad that I scrapped the plans and I saw a dear friend.

You never know what the world has in store for you. This was the bus line we took from Baltimore to New York.
