While running around filming I must have dropped a bag of memory cards. Thank goodness the camera I use has an inbuilt storage system I always back up. Though the cards that are lost are from Bali, which I had been meaning to edit for sometime. Never was there time. Something else always came up. When talking with Gracie the other night she said she was working on her life legacy statement. A required assignment she had to do for her fellowship.
I got to thinking about my life legacy. I thought I was living it, but when I asked myself what would that look like. The reply rolled off my tongue, ‘to be a fine dressmaker’. Yet I was preparing to wipe the resume clear of all my fashion experience, why? Well I have been stereotyped and misjudged when I mention that I am a designer. Then the question proceeds what does fashion have to do with, ‘organic farming, human rights and structural engineering’. All cases different but yet the same question.
I spit back with sharp words in a long email to the dean of my program, when overlooked for a community development fellowship. ‘Please let me have a shot to show you that I am eager, honest and whole heartedly committed to this placement. Stop asking the question ‘what does fashion have to do with…. the world and lets start asking how can Stacy give back while wearing great fashion’? Do not discriminate against a girl from pig town who found a fantasy world away from drugs, crime and intolerance. I found it through my imagination and as a result 46 children in the north of Bali have access to free english education. An education that may close doors on prostitution and open opportunities for a better life‘. I love fashion and that I cannot deny, I need to be a fine dressmaker. That is my life legacy along with hopefully being of some kind of service.
