Never heard of the word ‘Digital Nomad’ until slowly I became one. For those that don’t know, ‘Digital nomads are individuals who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living and, more generally, conduct their life in a nomadic manner. Such workers typically work remotely—from home, coffee shops, public libraries, and even recreational vehicles—to accomplish tasks and goals that traditionally took place in a single, stationary workplace’. I met a group of guys on a volcano and they got me thinking about how to rethink the working environment.
A consulting project with a luxury fashion brand had me utilizing various technologies apps to coordinate an array of communications between London, Bali, Australia and LA. During the process I explored more places, spent time with family and developed a new perspective around the working environment. As I make the transition funds have been tight, which resulted in original thought and creative exploration. I now see that I cannot go back to feeling that I must be confined to one geographic location to make a living. At present I am working on a few nonprofit fashion related projects to position for United Nations & future PHD work to empower communities through luxury fashion product development and international brand marketing.
Elsa Fitzgerald (my fashion label) is my test subject to see how we can effectively transition into this way of operating by empowering key individuals to learn to work remote as well. Not common for our small production team consisting of ‘two single Indonesian mothers with amazing handmade artisan talents. Happy to say we are building a new way of approaching the fashion industry and work life balance. My dream is that the larger umbrella company Bali Fashion Group sets the pace for people to work for an organization, while pursuing their own personal passions through education and adventure. The future businesses are ours to create! Let’s make magic while making money that supports others and ourselves.
